Welcome to our newest member of The Sociable Group, Anna-Mieke. We are so thrilled that she is part of our team.

Anna-Mieke is an enthusiastic and outgoing Allied Health Assistant currently completing her final year of a Bachelor of Applied Science in Speech Pathology at the University of Sydney. Originally from Tasmania, she moved to Sydney to pursue her studies.

Anna-Mieke has a strong background working with children and teens through nannying, tutoring, and pottery instruction. Her placement experience spans preschools, primary schools, and clinics, working in diverse areas including speech, language, literacy, Autism, ADHD, and learning disabilities. Passionate about advocacy, Anna-Mieke aims to support individuals with communication challenges.

Regulation is the bricks and mortar of any therapy

Regulation is the bricks and mortar of any therapy session - a session will not have a strong foundation without it.

Taking the time to ensure our clients are regulated allows for engagement, connection, and ultimately a more positive and beneficial session.

Building in time for regulation activities is essential for all our individual and group therapy sessions. This looks different for every client and may involve a whole range of regulatory strategies such as, fidget tools, lycra body socks, hammocks, swings, monkey bars, gym balls, water beads, kinetic sand, play dough, books, meditation, yoga, going for a walk, engaging in their passion…..the list is endless!

Taking regulation seriously increases capacity, builds connections and positively impacts therapy.

This weekend our teen Escapades group enjoyed a bu

This weekend our teen Escapades group enjoyed a bush walk through the national park, followed by a cafe visit.

The bush walk allowed our incredible group of teens a chance to relax in nature, while connecting with peers over shared experiences.

There was also some great opportunities to practice some life skills such as ordering food at a cafe.

A great adventure in the sunshine.

Let us introduce our Parent Education and Support

Let us introduce our Parent Education and Support Facilitator, the wonderful Callie.

Callie is an AuDHD’er (late identified) parenting three glorious, multiply-neurodivergent children. She has vast experience in supporting and advocating for her children across educational, medical and social settings.
Callie utilises her past experience as a medical doctor to critically evaluate the supports provided to neurodivergent kids, and to advocate for more affirming and inclusive options for all. Callie‘s background in Rehabilitation medicine has given her a foundation of working within a team using a strengths-based approach to support people in their goals.

Callie is passionate about helping other families navigate what can sometimes feel like an overwhelming landscape, bringing her lived experience and knowledge to help find supports and approaches that serve our neurodivergent kids and their families.

We are so incredibly lucky to have Callie as part of The Sociable Group team.

Communication is the key…but there are many different ways to unlock a message!

Communication is everybody’s right. We all need to communicate for a range of purposes such as,

* Expressing wants / needs
* Self-advocacy
* Consenting
* Dissenting
* Protesting
* Commenting
* Sensory motor experiences
* Requesting for help
* Sharing joy
* Coping with new situations

As Speech Pathologists, we work everyday to support individuals in communicating their thoughts, needs and preferences in their own way.

Accept, Affirm and Celebrate all forms of communication.

Everybody’s communication style is unique to the

Everybody’s communication style is unique to them, much like a fingerprint. People communicate in all sorts of ways including:
•using mouth words
•Sign
•gesture
•body language
•AAC
•written expression

There is no one correct way to communicate. Contrary to what many people believe, spoken language is NOT the Gold Standard of communication. All forms of communication are valid and should be accepted and celebrated- today and every day!

In the theme of Speech Pathology Week “communicate your way” we would like to highlight some of our many amazing AAC users who come to our clinic.

Our amazing clients access their devices through direct access, switch use and eyegaze. They use picture based, literacy and word based and keyboards to communicate their messages. We have users who use snippets of songs or recordings from a video to get their valuable messages across.

These incredible communicators embody the #SPweek2024 focus of #communicateyourway2024 by showing that you can communicate in a range of ways, with a range of assistive tools and that all communication is valid!
