Social Communication Programs

Building Bonds Teens and Tweens

Our activity based social communication group is designed for tweens and teens with intellectual impairment. In keeping with our philosophy, Building Bonds follows a strengths-based approach adhering to neurodiversity-affirming practice. 

Along with the support of speech pathologists, this group provides a safe opportunity for tween and teens to interact with their authentic communication and play styles, while learning to self-advocate and participate in activities of daily living. These groups offer a range of activities and experiences to explore our participants’ wide interests, while also supporting their varying motor abilities.  Types of activities include cooking, sensory play, exercise, LEGO and activities of daily living.

How long does the course run for?

Weekly 60 minute teen sessions for 14 weeks and some Building Bonds programs also offer parent sessions.

Escapades

Our Escapades outings program is designed for tweens and teens with an intellectual impairment.  In keeping with our philosophy, Escapades follows a strengths based approach adhering to neurodiversity-affirming practice. 

This small group session provides tweens teenagers with an opportunity to learn about and develop their authentic social communication in a fun, supportive and neurodiversity-affirming space.

This group is appropriate for tweens and teens who can stay with a group without 1 to 1 support.

Social Advocates

Our Social Advocates Social Communication Program is specifically designed for all neurotypes such as; ADHDers, Autistic and socially anxious teenagers and high school students. In keeping with our philosophy, Social Advocates follows a strengths based approach adhering to neurodiversity-affirming practice.

Using evidence-based principles and consultation with the Autistic community, this group offers a neurodivergent affirming space, where teens can meet and experience positive social engagement and interaction.

We support our participants’ social communication style to achieve their  social goals. This small group provides teenagers and young adults with an opportunity to learn about their authentic social communication through themed discussions (see below for topics).

  • Interoception skills (reinforcing all feelings are valid and learning self-regulatory strategies)

InterAACtors


Our InterAACtors Social Communication Program is specifically designed for AAC users and their carers/parents. In keeping with our philosophy, InterAACtors follows a strengths based approach adhering to neurodiversity-affirming practice.

Using evidence-based principles this group offers AAC users and their communication partners an opportunity to experience positive social engagement and interaction with other AAC users. InterAACtors is centred around developing individuals’ AAC use in social contexts, whilst building their carers’ confidence and skills in modelling and facilitiating AAC use.

  • Developing functional literacy for all
  • Promoting AAC in social contexts
  • Promoting AAC in activities of daily living
  • Using AAC in play
  • Building confidence and competence for carers and users of AAC

How long does the course run for?

Teenagers and carers/parents attend 60 minute sessions for 10 weeks.

Teen Mentors


Our Teen Mentors program is offered to participants who have completed the Social Advocates program. This program provides teenagers with an opportunity to learn and develop important mentoring and leadership skills. It also provides them with opportunities to focus on personal goals in a supported environment. 

Through mentoring younger neurodivergent children, teenagers benefit from sharing lived experience and supporting their mental health through giving back.

How long does the course run for?

Teenagers attend 90 minute sessions for 6 weeks as well as weekly 30 minute 1:1 mentor support sessions with speech pathologist
